On the 8th, Kia began taking pre-orders for one new car. That car is the ‘Carnival’, and the new model is a partially modified model of the 4th generation Carnival. The striking interior and changes also attracted attention, but the new Carnival captured the attention of consumers by adding ‘this’ for the first time. A month later, the recent status of this car was reported and it was quite surprising. According to the industry, a significant portion of the contract volume is said to be going to specific models.
New Carnival, focus on specific models already starting?
Even though it is 13% more expensive, I still choose ‘this car’
The ‘specific model’ mentioned above is a hybrid. According to the industry, based on this month’s contract for the Carnival Hybrid, buyers will have to wait for up to a year or more to receive the car. This is a huge difference compared to the 3-4 month waiting period for gasoline models during the same period.
The hybrid model (based on 9 seats), which has been added from this new model, starts at a selling price of 39.25 million won. For reference, it is about 13% more expensive than the gasoline model (starting at 34.7 million won). The price is reasonable, but the hybrid model is still undergoing government certification, so only pre-orders are accepted, and official sales have not yet begun. Nevertheless, Carnival Hybrid is known to account for more than 70% of the total number of pre-orders.
The highly anticipated Carnival Hav, what is its performance?
The powertrain of ‘The New Carnival’ hybrid uses the 1.6 gasoline turbo hybrid system previously used by Hyundai Motor Group. It demonstrates a combined maximum output of 245 horsepower (maximum engine output of 180 horsepower) and a combined maximum torque of 37.4kgf·m (maximum engine torque 27.0kgf·m). Compared to the smaller Sorento Hybrid, the output increased by 10 horsepower and the torque increased by 1.7kgf·m.
Fuel efficiency achieved 14.0 km/L per liter (Kia’s own measurement standard). It boasts superior figures compared to the 3.5 gasoline (9.0 km/L) and 2.2 diesel (13.1 km/L). Here, Kia improved ride comfort and driving performance by installing ▲E-Ride ▲E-Handling ▲E-EHA, technologies that utilize drive motors in hybrids.
Is the 1.43 million won benefit possible?
Hybrid cars can also receive tax benefits if they meet certain conditions (two types of eco-friendly car certification). The total amount is 1.43 million won, including 1 million won in individual consumption tax and 400,000 won in acquisition tax. In the case of Carnival Hybrid, the recognition process is still in progress regarding whether this benefit is available. However, some are raising concerns that they may not be receiving it.
The reason is the difference of 0.03 km. The Carnival Hybrid, based on a 1.6L turbo engine, has a displacement of 1,598cc. Based on displacement, this car is a mid-size car. To receive the aforementioned benefits, the Carnival Hybrid must have a speed of 14.3 km/l or higher, which is the standard for mid-size cars. Recently, there has been a rumor in the community that some Kia Motors sales offices have already announced that they do not receive benefits. The exact information can only be known after the final results are released after the certification is completed, so we need to wait and see.
1.6 Is hybrid the inevitable choice?
After confirming the hybrid system to be installed in the new Carnival, some people responded that it was disappointing. The reason was the limitations of the engine to be installed. The 1.6 gasoline turbo hybrid system, which is also installed in the Carnival Hybrid, has been evaluated as being relatively poor in performance in large and heavy vehicles.
At this time, news about a new hybrid system became known, adding to my disappointment. According to the industry, the new system scheduled to be developed is a 2.5 turbo hybrid, which is based on the 2.5-liter Theta3 gasoline turbo engine. For reference, this is expected to boast a much more powerful output than the existing 1.6L turbo hybrid. In addition, it is expected to meet favorable conditions for receiving eco-friendly vehicle certification even after being installed in large vehicles.
However, considering the expected application time of the new engine, some say that this system would have been the best for the Carnival Hybrid. The exact timing is not clear as news of the development has just been released, but the industry expects mass production to take place in 2025 at the earliest. It is only an ‘expectation’, but if it comes out as is, we can at least expect it to be installed around the time when the Carnival undergoes a full change.
A word from the editor
The industry predicts that the Carnival Hybrid will be popular among consumers, even if it does not receive tax benefits. The price has risen to a price point that makes it difficult to label it as ‘dad’s car’ or ‘people’s car’, but the reason is that it is currently difficult to find a minivan that can replace it in Korea. In addition, although the initial entry price is higher than that of a pure internal combustion engine, the installation of a hybrid model will be an irresistible temptation for owners considering a minivan.
With this month mentioned as the expected sales date, will the Carnival Hybrid be able to maintain the popularity of pre-orders? I’m looking forward to it.
